10 Hot Tips for Keeping Your Lawn Green
There’s nothing that says you care about your lawn more than beautiful lush green lawn all year round. But gorgeous grass doesn’t just happen, it needs care and thought, but is easily achievable when you follow these ten simple, effective steps:
1. Water, Water, Everywhere
It’s an important point to consider that you water your grass at the right time. Turning on the sprinklers in the heat of the midday sun will do nothing for your lawn. The water will evaporate, leaving your grass as thirsty as ever.
Choose to water your garden in the early morning when the day is coolest and the emerging root systems of the grass can absorb the water where they need it most.
2. Timing Is of The Essence
Giving your lawn water every day is not necessary, as it needs time to develop some hardiness and longevity. This can be developed by allowing your grass to have a good long soak approximately 2-3 times a week. The soak encourages strength and endurance, with implications for a more developed root system.
3. Careful Not to Waste
Ensure you aren’t wasting water when you feed your grass. If you water too long in the same place, you will create runoff. This not only bogs the grass down but is a waste of water. If you need to continually soak one area, at least turn your hose off, until all the extra water has been absorbed, before turning it on again. Try hard to make the watering even throughout the garden, for a more uniform outcome.
4. Your Path Doesn’t Need Water
A lot of water is often wasted, by way of soaking the path. Water can easily be re-directed to a more appropriate and useful area with careful observation. Keep an eye on where your watering is taking place, as sometimes the grass can be left totally dry, whilst your pathway becomes wet.
5. Aeration Is the Key
Like every living thing, grass needs nutrients and oxygen. Without aeration, the lawn can become compacted, dry and cement-like. With the use of a simple garden fork, you can create small, but useful holes in your grass to allow filtration of all vital elements for lawn improvement. Water can be absorbed more readily as well as a variety of other growing elements.
6. Feed the Grass Properly
To improve your grass, it is a sensible idea to add appropriate fertiliser from time to time. Ensure that you read the finer details of your chosen fertiliser since some must be applied at certain times of the year, and in certain quantities.
Like the human body, what we put into our bodies, has a consequence for our health, the grass is the same, and benefits from carefully curated nourishment.
7. Shorter Isn’t Better
When considering the health of your lawn, shorter isn’t better. It’s vital that you mow at a height that suits the growth and development of your grass. If you cut it too short, it will brown and dry out leaving you with a barren wasteland. Cutting your grass, every 1-2 weeks at a height that leaves plenty of green on show is the best choice.
8. If It Rains
If it rains there may be no need to water, that is if the rain is sufficient enough to drench the grass and root system. If it’s a light sprinkling that barely wets the ground, you may find you need to help the lawn along somewhat
9. Prevention Is Better than Cure
If your grass is springing weeds left, right and center, try to get rid of them in the earliest stages possible. Once they have taken hold, they can cause unsightly marks and holes in the grass and they can take over. It’s better to paint the wees with an appropriate substance rather than spraying them. The spray could also damage the surrounding grass.
10. Keep It Cool
Have you ever noticed that water left in a hose can get very warm? Hot even. When using the hose to water your lawn, ensure any remaining water has been tipped out so as not to squirt hot water onto the grass. Hot water can scald grass and kill it quickly, getting rid of any last droplets in the hose before you turn it on will prevent water burn.
Follow these ten very simple ideas and your grass will be a luxurious bed of gorgeous green in no time.
